According to Apple Inc., toggling off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth buttons on iOS 11’s Control Center will disconnect a host device from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth accessories. However, the respective radios will stay active to facilitate the usage of features like Instant Hotspot, AirDrop, Handoff, Apple Watch, and Apple Pencil.
Such features rely on location services that remain enabled even though the respective connectivity buttons have been toggled off from iOS 11’s Control Center. As this may cause an inconvenience to you, below are three ways ensure the connectivity radios stay off on the iPad tablet and remain that way until you manually reactivate them by toggling it back.
To disable the Wi-Fi, navigate to Settings app on iOS 11, tap on Wi-Fi option and toggle off the Wi-Fi radio if the toggle button is shown in green color. To disable Bluetooth on iOS 11, tap on the Bluetooth button from Settings, and toggle off the button denoted by gray color and not green. This will only turn off the buttons but the radio will remain active for location services.
There is also one more step to disable all radio communication including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Cellular modem from the iOS device and that is the Airplane Mode. To enable the feature, open the Control Center by swiping up from the bottom of the refurbished iPad and then turn on the Airplane Mode button denoted by an Airplane icon. When you enable Airplane mode, the button will appear in orange color and the connectivity buttons for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirDrop, etc., will turn from blue to gray indicating a disconnection.
It shall be noted Apple Inc. recently got criticized by Electronic Freedom Foundation for the Control Center’s loopholes. The EFF says, “When a phone is designed to behave in a way other than what the UI suggests, it results in both security and privacy problems,” in relation to the location services.
The Control Center is one of the new additions on iOS 11 and until Apple comes up with updates, we may have to rely on Airplane Mode. Turning off the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radio from the Control Center when you are not using them will not only ensure security, but will also keep intact the battery performance of the compatible iPad tablet ft. iOS 11.
